As the January transfer window moves to within 9 days of closing, The Soccer Sofa will analyse three of the top rumours each day until the window slams shut at midnight on February 1st. Rumours provided by Football Whispers.
Patrick van Aanholt to Crystal Palace
After the sad and unfortunate accident involving Pape Souaré, Crystal Palace have had a positional problem at left back. Patrick van Aanholt would certainly fill that void having been, along with Defoe, their stand out player.
Sam Allardyce has always put having a solid back four top of his agenda and needs to rectify the problem at Palace quickly. Delaney, Dann and Tomkins should be performing better than they are, but a good outlet on the left-hand side in Van Aanholt may be just what they need.
Sunderland fans will be extremely disappointed should the Dutchman jump ships, as a loss of one of their key players would surely steer them towards the Championship. Seeing off advances by West Ham for Jerman Defoe would have given them hope, but the £12m Palace expect to spend will be nothing compared to the price Sunderland may pay for being relegated.
Dimitri Payet to Marseille
Give Me Sport reported the amusing story of Payet being booted out of the West Ham player’s Whatsapp group, but the saga surrounding the Frenchman is no laughing matter. Refusing to play for a club is one thing, but refusing to play for a club that has MADE YOU is another thing.
An inconsistent performer for Marseille, the Hammers took a £10.7m gamble on Payet, which could have easily backfired. Instead, he was nominated for Premier League player of the season and was arguably France’s star performer at the Euros. Whilst still playing in France, Payet was rarely considered for the national side, featuring just 11 times without scoring.
Reportedly rejecting a third bid of £22.5m from Marseille, West Ham are holding out for Payet, who signed a long-term deal in February. They’ve got to get rid as soon as possible though. Having a player disrupting the dressing room is a recipe for disaster.
Scott Hogan to West Ham
It’s got to be said that this would be a risk for West Ham. Despite scoring 14 goals so far this season for Brentford, Hogan is still relatively unproven, having been playing for Rochdale in League 2 three seasons ago.
West Ham have been linked with Defoe, Andre Gray and even Daniel Sturridge this window, so Hogan has a lot to live up to. Although, strikers coming from non-league football have proven that with hard work, the jump to the Premier League can be made. Wasn’t there a guy called Jamie something…
